While there are numerous artisan knives being made in America, the R.Murphy knife factory is the only family-owned factory that still manufactures knives by hand. I visited their factory in Ayer, Massachusetts and followed several types of knives through the manufacturing process.
Watching the care and precision during each step reminded me a great deal of the time and care true pitmasters take in making outstanding barbecue. We are very grateful to R. Murphy for supplying us with knives to use for Big Apple Barbecue Block Party prep. Ultra-sharp knives made prepping 3,200 racks of ribs go much more smoothly!
I was thrilled to be gifted with several models of knives to try out. The boning knife, 8″ chef’s knife, and 10″ butcher knife are new favorites on my knife rack. This fall we plan to work with R. Murphy to develop a Mike Mills Legend Series knife set featuring four knives we use daily in the 17th Street kitchen. Please let me know in the comments if you are interested in learning more. We hope to have them ready by the holidays.
Since I spend a good deal of the year on the South Shore of Boston, I loved seeing these custom oyster knives made for Island Creek {located not far from me in Duxbury}, as well as for other well-known oyster farms and restaurants.
If you’re looking to add to your collection, we highly recommend these knives.
Please keep me posted. Would very possibly be interested in a set (or more) for Christmas gift(s).
I would be honored to own a set of knives made to the very high standards of Mike Mills and R. Murphy. Please let me know when the set is available, I will be first in line!
